States Nursery Classes

What is a States Nursery Class?

A purpose-built nursery class attached to a States primary school.

A list of States nursery classes can be found on this website.

General Information

  • Term time only.
  • Usually 9am-3pm.
  • They can accommodate 30 children.
  • 1:10 ratio of adult to children (higher than preschool).
  • Children need to be toilet trained.
  • All of these will all be offering the 20 free hours per week for children in the academic year before your child starts reception class in school.  This is during term time only (38 weeks) but runs for the whole of that preschool year.

Parents’ Top Tips

Please note: these are opinions from parents and are not those of the Trust.

  • Ask the Manager about their levels of staff turnover.  A higher staff turnover offers less opportunity to form stronger bonds with carers.
  • Ask key staff members how long they have worked there and what they enjoy about working there, as this can give you a different perspective.
  • The best guide is your own gut reaction to a place.  Does it feel warm and friendly?  Is it clean?  Do the staff seem caring, calm and confident?
  • With a higher number of children around there is a higher chance of infection.  Common complaints include colds or headlice but also other childhood illnesses such as chicken pox and slap cheek can spread easily in group environments.  You may think this is good for their immune system or be concerned for these things spreading to siblings.
  • Ask questions that are important to you.  For example, what is their policy on the children having time outside or how do they discipline children.

Statutory Requirements

  • There will be a qualified teacher, with two Level 3 qualified Early Years Practitioners only.
  • All States nursery classes are registered annually by Childcare Registration in the Education Department.

Please note: unlike England, there is no public information giving an insight into each setting, outlining areas of strength or developmental need.
